Chapter 1: One - almost two - Smoking Guns

It was a busy night at the Smoking Gun club. The club was packed and Lisa made her way through the crowd of people toward the bar. It was a Friday night and people of all walks of life filled the club. Lisa wove in and out of the crowd, expertly dodging elbows and hips as people danced, laughing and cheering.

“Can I get a beer and a martini, ‘shaken, not stirred’ for James Blonde and his friend over there please?” Lisa half yelled the order to the barman as she arrived at the counter, nodding her head towards a young pair of gentlemen sitting at a high table. One wore his blonde hair in a man-bun with a smug expression to match his gaudy baby-blue suit, the other had leering eyes that peered out over pudgy, freckled cheeks, dressed in denims with a denim jacket.

“Busy night eh?” The barman chuckled at her remark as he produced a shaker from below the counter and started mixing the drink.

“Sure is, Billy, but I’m not complaining.” Lisa gave half a grin and patted her pocket with her earnings for the night.

Billy the barman placed the martini and beer on Lisa’s tray with the receipt. “Well, may there be many more!” he called after her as she immediately made off with her order.

Lisa carefully squeezed her way back through the bustling crowd towards the two men waiting at the high table.

“Here we go, one beer and a martini.” Lisa said as she placed the drinks on the table. She could feel their eyes on her. “Do you kind gentlemen need anything else?” She asked looking up at the men, catching Freckles ogling her temporarily exposed cleavage. This was nothing new to her. Her figure was covered in a tight black cocktail dress that hugged her tiny body like a glove. The dress had a V-neck which drew attention to her ample bosom. Around her waist she wore her waitress apron that fit snugly around her tiny waist. Her dress came down to a few inches above her knees, accentuating her athletic legs and apple shaped behind.

“How about you sit on my lap Baby?” The freckle-face said pulling his seat a bit backward as he grinned at Lisa.

“No thanks sir, anything else?” Lisa replied curtly trying not to show her utter disgust.

“Aww c’mon Sweet-cheeks, don’t let your sweet cheeks go to waste give him some of that tasty ass.” The blonde one said as he clapped his hand solidly onto Lisa’s buttock, not letting go.

“No thanks Sir, please keep your hands to yourself.” Lisa stated firmly as she turned her body away from the smug faced man.

“No need to be a bitch, unless you want to be my bitch.” whined Freckles as he also made a swipe for her ass. Lisa pulled away just in time, and decided that she would rather not spend any more time at the table, and turned to walk away.

“Don’t play hard-to-get, I can see you want me. But that’s fine, you know I love to watch you leave with that fine ass you got there.” was the last words Lisa heard as she disgustedly walked away, still feeling their eyes following her every movement. Lisa made her way toward the back to collect herself when she heard the familiar drawl of Larry, the owner of the Smoking Gun.

“I see you’ve made some new friends.” Larry half chuckled, half coughed his remark and smoke bellowed out from his nostrils, cigarette dangling from his mouth.

“You mean you saw that?” Lisa asked incredulously.

“Sure, they seem to be having fun.”

“They were harassing me, your employee, and you think it is funny? Why are you not throwing them out?”

“Oh come on, they’re harmless, besides don’t think I have missed the fact that you didn’t get the money for those drinks. Consider it paid out of your pocket, kid!” Larry squawked as an abrupt cough made ash from his cigarette drop onto his already dirty shirt.

“Are you serious? You know what Larry, I have had enough of this!” Lisa was livid. She stuck her hand into her apron pocket and pulled out a few bills and threw them at Larry who greedily almost waddled to pick up the bills that he was too slow to catch. By the time Larry could stuff the money into his pocket and look up, Lisa was already storming away.

“I quit!” was the last he heard from her, before she vanished into the milling crowd of dancing bodies.

The night air was cold when Lisa made it outside, and her breath came out in clouds, and she rubbed her hands together. She still heard the low bass notes from the club spill out onto the street. She retrieved her phone from her purse to call a cab just to hear the dreaded descending bleep noise as her phone battery died. Crap! Just when I need this damned thing. I can’t go back and face Larry to ask to use his phone. I’ll be fine, I just have to walk, no problem. Lisa rounded the corner when she heard footsteps behind her. It made her a little nervous so she quickened her pace a little, but the steps just sped up with hers. After a few feet, she mustered up the courage to look behind her and saw two silhouetted figures which looked vaguely familiar.

“Can I help you?” Lisa asked and realized that she had a bit of a sarcastic tone left in her voice from her spat with Larry.

“Oh, now she wants to help us out?” laughed the one man.

“Yeah girl, you never gave me my order, remember?” the other chimed in with his friend. The moment they spoke up, Lisa identified them as Freckles and Man-bun.

“Now look guys, I don’t need this right now, I already tried being polite before.” Lisa started backing away from them, but they matched every backward step she took with a forward stride of their own.

“You were rude, don’t you know the customer always comes first?” Freckles said with an edge to his voice.

“I expect that all of the women in your life have had that experience, right? You know, where you have to pay for it so that you are the customer and they have to make you come first?” Lisa spat out the comeback before she realized that it may be stupid to taunt these men.

The blonde man with the man-bun was in front of her in a split second and he grabbed her face below the chin, squeezing her cheeks together as he leaned in closer. Lisa felt the cold metallic touch against her warm neck from the pistol the man was pressing against her.

“That was not very nice, I think you need to apologies to my friend here.” He whispered to her through gritted teeth. “Don’t you think she should apologies, Fr
eddie?”

“Yeah, Kevin, I think she should apologies on her knees!” Freddie the freckled face laughed as he stepped closer. The sound of his zipper rang through the cold night air as Lisa was forced to her knees.

Lisa’s heart was pounding in her chest as Kevin pushed her shoulders down, forcing her to her knees. Her eyes started tearing up when she realized that her fate was sealed. She thought to herself this was going to happen to me tonight: I will become a statistic. Kevin brought down the butt of his pistol hard against the back of her head. The blow was staggering and Lisa could feel herself almost slipping from consciousness, as darkness enveloped her tear filled eyes.

Blinded by the tears now flowing freely from her eyes, Lisa knelt awaiting her fate when she heard a loud thudding noise and the pressure on her shoulders was released. She then heard a loud crack and a sudden release of air, followed by a wheeze. She tried to wipe the tears from her eyes when she heard a soft, yet strong, deep voice.

“Don’t worry, ma’am, you are safe.” The golden voice was unlike anything Lisa had ever heard before, and she instantly felt safer.

“Thank you…” she started, “but I… I can’t see.” Lisa felt panic rise inside her as she realized that she was completely blind. “Something is wrong, I can’t see…. I’m blind!” Lisa yelled out into the nothingness. Her head was spinning, and terror grasped at her chest. Every fibre in her was screaming just look and see! It had to be the easiest thing in the world, Lisa thought, just open your damn eyes and see! But no matter how much she tried, she could not force her eyes to see. The darkness turned into dark grey shouldering shapes, and enveloped her vision. Her breathing was accelerated and she felt herself get nauseated from the fright that grasped her heart, as if with icy fingers. Her terror-filled ideas were interrupted by the soft and gentle touch of a warm hand on her arm.

“Ma’am, you are safe with me, I will take you to a doctor, just take my hand.” Again this voice, like golden honey, soothed her panic and Lisa could feel her heart rate slow ever so slightly. Then she felt the warm sensation of this man’s large hand taking hers, softly, yet firmly as he helped her to her feet.

“What happened to those men? They were about to…” Lisa’s voice trailed off as she struggled to say the word out loud.

“They will not be bothering you again, dear, now just hold on, I’ll get you to the car. Here, you are freezing…”

Lisa felt a warm sensation as this unseen angel wrapped his jacket over her shoulders. It felt soft and smooth and warm. Then her feet were swooped out from under her as the man picked her up into his arms. She clumsily extended her arms and found his neck to hold on to. She could tell that this man was very large, not only by the size of the hand that was offered to her earlier, but the way that she felt the muscles in his neck bulge as she held onto him. Her tiny frame pressed firmly against his broad barrel chest.

“What is your name?” Lisa asked, she realized that even though she had just been attacked she felt as if she could trust this man to keep her safe.

“My name is Gordon, ma’am” he replied softly.

Then she felt him gently placing her into his car and fasten her seatbelt. He got into the driver side and started the engine which roared to life. It was unmistakably the sound of a Ford Mustang V8 engine bursting to life when the vehicle started accelerating.

The pain from the blow to her head was still pounding in her neck and head, and she felt a wet sensation in the back of her neck. She was bleeding. She felt herself slip close to the edge of unconsciousness again. The last thoughts in her mind before she drifted off into oblivion, was of this man who had come out of nowhere.

Who is he? How did he save me? Will I ever see him again? Will I ever see again? Gordon…

  Chapter 2: Saint, or Angel?

Lisa was floating in a dream still hearing the echoes of Gordon’s deep voice, telling her it would all be all right. She could still smell the spicy aroma of his cologne, as her head rested against his broad chest, when he had carried her to safety in his strong arms. But her dream was being interfered with. She suddenly felt herself being jerked back into consciousness. The rhythmic beeping and bleeping noises of medical equipment filled her ears, and she could make out a woman’s voice as it came into focus into her mind.

“Miss Lombardi?” the voice came again. “Miss Lombardi, I am Doctor Emma Taylor…”

Lisa groaned as she tried to clear her head and concentrate. “I can’t see you, doctor. What’s going on? Where am I?” Lisa started to panic and sat up straight in her bed. “Ouch!” Lisa cried, when she felt a sharp pain in her left arm.

“Miss Lombardi, please calm down and relax, you are safe. You are in St. Angela hospital.” Doctor Taylor said softly, and Lisa could feel a warm soft female hand rest gently on her shoulder, guiding her to lay back again. “There we go, Miss Lombardi…”

“Please, call me Lisa.” She sighed, trying to compose herself.

“All right then, Lisa, like I said, I am Doctor Emma Taylor from St. Angela, and you, my dear, just bent the needle of your IV when you sat up so suddenly.”

The doctor seemed friendly and reassuring. Lisa felt the doctor remove the needle that she had bent carefully and almost painlessly, and a few moments later Doctor Emma said “This will pinch just a bit” as she put in a new needle.

  “What happened?” Lisa asked.

“You took a bad knock to the head, my dear, do you remember anything from what happened?”

“I remember being attacked…” Lisa trailed off as she recalled the chilling events of the night before. She remembered those two men, wanting to have their way… The gun… “I was hit on my head with a gun and then I could not see...” Lisa’s voice cracked, as she felt another surge of panic boil up, as the thought of being rendered blind flashed into her mind.

“Yes, that explains it.” Doctor Emma said, “Your brain has swelling from the blunt force trauma that you had sustained. The swelling inside your brain is placing pressure onto your ocular nerves, causing your blindness. The strangest part of this is, that your eyes can still see just fine, it is just that your brain is not able to interpret the signals coming from your eyes, because the nerves are not delivering the message.”

Just then Lisa heard a door open and two pairs of heavily booted footsteps, briskly walking closer to her bed.

“Doctor, can we talk to her now? She seems to be conscious and able to answer our questions.”

“Sure, but I don’t want you overexciting her…” Lisa heard the doctor speak to her again “Lisa, these men are from the police, they just want to ask you a few questions. I’ll be right outside, if you need me.”

Doctor Taylor exited the room and the policemen spoke up. “I am Danny Carson and this is my partner, Frank Schechter. We are from the Fairview Police Department, and we are here to ask you a few questions about what had transpired during last night’s events.”

“Sure, did you get the guys who attacked me?” Lisa replied.

“We don’t know ma’am, but maybe we can find out. What exactly happened last night?” Carson asked. Lisa could hear him pulling a notebook from his pocket.

Lisa recounted the events of the previous night, the fear and the terror that she had been in. She told them about the man placing a gun against her and then hitting her against the head. The two policemen asked her for descriptions of her attackers and she explained to them to the best of her abilities, what the two men had looked like. After a while Carson’s voice went lower, softer, almost as if he was trying his best to be assertive but still caring.

“But ma’am…” Carson cleared his throat uncomfortably, “they did not rape you?” Carson sounded sincerely concerned for Lisa.

“No, I don’t think so, officer, I think I may have lost consciousness, I was in and out of it, and I’m not exactly sure what had happened next.” Lisa thought back to where the onslaught upon her had just abruptly stopped. Gordon clearly stopped them… and he may have hurt them badly.
Lisa remembered the sound of cracking bones that she had heard. In that moment she could only think of this wonderful man who had saved her, and that she would never want to do anything that could jeopardize him…Gordon, who are you?

This time Schechter cleared his throat, “Miss Lombardi, we found two men who match that description.”

“Great! Have you arrested them? I could identify them by hearing their voices.” Lisa replied.

“Um, well Miss Lombardi, that won’t be possible, they were found dead in the ally where you had been attacked.” Carson took over like in one of those old cop TV shows, “Yes Miss Lombardi, do you know anything about that?” he gave her a very stern look, and immediately felt rather stupid, realizing that she could not see him.

Lisa gave it one more thought, she had to protect Gordon. “Sorry, officers, I had been hit in the head, as I said, I was barely keeping myself conscious, I may have blacked out. Hell, I don’t even know exactly how I got here.”

“All right then ma’am, you must have some guardian angel looking over you. I will leave our number with your doctor, if you remember anything else, however minute it may seem, please give us a call.” Carson nodded to the door to where Doctor Taylor stood waiting. She took the card from the policemen, as they left the room, they gave a final “Good luck with your recovery Miss Lombardi.” and left.

Doctor Taylor came back to Lisa’s side and spoke softly, “Whatever happened to those men, they deserve it, I won’t ask any more about that.”

Lisa thought that she could trust the doctor, but decided it was best not to mention Gordon at this stage, as it may implicate him. Doctor Taylor took Lisa’s hand and placed a glass of cold water into her hand.

“There you go, Lisa, have some cold water, you must be very thirsty, it has a straw, so just find it with your fingers…There you go.” Doctor Taylor was kind and gentle, and Lisa figured that she was in good hands.
